Hiking is a popular recreational pastime in Arizona, as a get-away from urban living, while enjoying the beauty and wildlife of nature. Hiking season runs all year in Arizona. Of course, with unpredictable weather and fires, some trails may be closed anytime during the season. The websites for the area will usually inform you of any closures or cautions and we provide links for most of the trails in our directory Search Tucson Pictures

General Hitchcock Self Service Campground

For a few days in mid February 2009 there was some snow on Mount Lemmon in Tucson, Arizona. We took the opportunity to drive up and spend the day in the snow. We decided to stay at General Hitchcock Campground since the 6000 feet in elevation was about where the temperature changed from 32 degrees. So it was just under freezing and a bit more sunny than the campgrounds further up the mountain. This is a self service area, and the Fee Station was closed so we used the envelopes provided to pay $10 for our daily stay.

Take an envelope. Since they were all wet at the bottom we reached in from the top for a dry one that would still seal. We had correct change but we needed to use some actual coins. The envelopes and payment slot were large enough to accommodate the coins

Self Service pay area is easy to use with a check, or correct change. We had intended to purchase a pass to use Mt Lemmon all year, but the Fee Station was closed.

We drove up on a snowy day in Feb 2009. The Mt Lemmon Highway was restricted to 4x4 and cars with chains. A yellow bear warning sign stands out against the white background

White trees are not a common sight in Southern Arizona, so this drive up into the snow line was a treat
