Regal Horned
Lizard (Phrynosoma solare)
Color varies with habitat
from tan to reddish-brown to gray. We
saw this one in southeast Tucson in April
2008. He stopped and let us take these
pictures of him. Afterwe were done he
stuck around for a while watching us,
then went into the shade and he became
even harder to see

These feed
mostly on Ants, which are hard to digest,
so they eat a lot of them.

Regal
Horned Lizards have squirt a bloody
fluid from around their eyes that irritates
canines (coyotes)

Regal horned lizards
are the largest U.S. species of horned
lizard

The distinguishing
feature of Regal horned lizard are the
four long
horns on the back of the head which touch
each other at the head

The Regal
horned lizard live across southeastern
Arizona at elevations ranging from
900' to 4,500’
